The daemon does not start with the --daemon option. Some other documents suggest ?daemon. This does not work either! Any ideas.

Make sure there is a full charage return at the end of the line and only one space before each option. make sure there are other characters in the command line. This simplest for NetWare would be (without the # )

rsync -v --progress --port=873 --daemon
