AntiVirus
- Novell GroupWise is not as susceptible to viruses as other vendors' products; however, as a messaging product, GroupWise can transport viruses.
- Every organization should have a two-pronged Virus/SPAM Policy that includes Virus and Content Scanning and User Education.
- Server Side Virus and Content Scanning
- Novell recommends that customers implement virus protection solutions at every entry point of their network. Since viruses and SPAM received from incoming Internet messages pose the greatest threat, Novell recommends implementing virus and SPAM protection before the GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA).
- Some vendors provide scanning of GroupWise messages within the GroupWise system at the domain and post office level. These products do not directly scan the GroupWise directories. Because the GroupWise message store is both encrypted and compressed, you should NEVER configure your virus protection software to scan the GroupWise domain or post office directories. Doing so will result in corrupted message store and administration databases.
- Many different vendors have made products specifically written to integrate with Novell GroupWise to protect your GroupWise system from virus-laden messages from the Internet. Please refer to the Novell GroupWse Product Partner Page for additional information.
- Workstation Virus Scanning
- Every user workstation should load a reliable virus protection software package. Administrators should also ensure that virus definition files are updated as soon as they are available.
- User Education
- Anti-Virus software packages alone cannot protect your organization from every virus attack. Virus Protection software cannot anticipate what new viruses will be created. For this reason, administrators need to educate users in order to prevent and minimize the effects of virus attacks.
- The following represents a list of common-sense rules that users should consider:
- DO NOT open messages from people you do not know.
- DO NOT open attachments that you are not expecting (even from trusted sources) until you have verified with the sender that they sent you the attachment.
- Notify the Help Desk when you receive a warning from your Virus Protection software package.
- Suspect messages that appear in your mailbox more than once.
- When in doubt call the Help Desk.
